Everything you need to know about EV preconditioning

Find a charger
Enjoy optimum EV performance, and optimum driving comfort too
Preconditioning is a very useful way of enabling your battery to perform more efficiently and safely.
Preconditioning typically involves the automatic heating or cooling of the battery to bring it within a moderate temperature range where it can perform under optimal charging conditions.
So even in the heat of a blistering hot summer or the depths of a frozen frosty winter, preconditioning can make your drive smoother, help maximize your battery’s range management, and prolong its life.
How does it work?
Your EV has a dedicated thermal management system (TMS), which is constantly working out the most efficient way of performing (whether you’re driving or not!). So, if the TMS detects that your battery is becoming overheated, or too cold, it can adjust the battery’s environment accordingly so it performs at the optimum performance level.
It can also prepare your battery for a charge if you’ve included a bp pulse charging break in your journey’s navigation. It will then work out which of our chargers you’re using, and set the optimum battery temperature to receive charge from that charger.
Your TMS can even set your cabin temperature too. It’s a very luxurious feeling to climb into a cosy warm car on a frosty morning!
Benefits of preconditioning
Prolongs battery life Batteries perform better and longer within a moderate controlled environment | Faster charging time |
Longer range An excessively hot or cold battery can lead to a reduction in range. | Extreme weather management |
How to use preconditioning
Most EVs have automatic TMS preconditioning technology, which will activate seamlessly to maximize the efficiency of your journeys. It may be possible to change the parameters and settings that your TMS uses; if so, these parameters should be in the vehicle settings you access from your EV cabin.
If you have an app for your EV, then it may be possible to manually activate, adjust, or switch off preconditioning settings.
Of course, different EV models tend to have slight variations, so refer to your vehicle manual for all the details.
Common myths about preconditioning
You may have heard differing opinions on when or even whether to use preconditioning. Here, we explain away the most popular misapprehensions about this process.
Preconditioning is only for extreme weather
While preconditioning is most critical in extreme weather (especially when it’s very cold), even in moderate temperatures it can still enhance charging speed and battery life.
All EVs have the same preconditioning
Not all EVs are equipped with the same preconditioning capabilities. Some models benefit from highly sophisticated Thermal Management Systems, while others may have simpler systems or lack automated preconditioning. Check your vehicle manual or a dealer to make sure.

Preconditioning always saves on charging time
Preconditioning can reduce charging times; but it doesn't always make a noticeable difference unless compared with a battery that is at an extreme temperature. In moderate temperatures, the effect on charging time may be minimal.
Enjoy your EV driving more with preconditioning
Preconditioning is an extremely beneficial function for enjoying optimum battery performance when charging and driving; so use it!
