Whether you’re cruising into your first summer as an EV driver, renting one for a fun getaway, or just looking for ways to max out your summer adventures, this guide will get you road-trip ready in no time!
1. Plan your stops for maximum fun
A little planning goes a long way. Mapping out your route and charging spots in advance can help you make the most of your trip. Look for parks, roadside attractions, or theme parks nearby where you can stretch your legs and have some fun while your EV powers up.

2. Pack your must-haves
Roadside hiccups are more common than you think but being ready makes all the difference. Before you hit the road, it’s a good idea to keep an emergency supply kit in your trunk. Here's a quick checklist: car safety kit, first aid kit, non-perishable snacks, the right charging adapters, a USB adapter, and a portable battery pack.
For those sunny summer drives, consider bringing plenty of drinking water, a cooler, and a picnic blanket. Pro tip: You might want to carry a windshield sunshade. If you’re parking in direct sunlight, it will keep your cabin cool without draining your EV’s battery on AC. Thank yourself for your meticulous planning when you get back in and it doesn’t feel like a sauna.
3. Got kids? Bring the entertainment
If you’re road-tripping with kids, you’ll probably hear “Are we there yet?” more than once. Keep boredom at bay with card games, puzzles, coloring books, and more.
If some screen time is allowed, then load up your tablets with movies and games in advance. You can also make a few playlists - road trip singalongs, classics, and some karaoke tracks. Get everyone to sing and join in the fun!
Just remember, running too many electronics off your EV’s battery can affect its range. To ensure you're always prepared, cover all bases and charge your devices smartly!
4. Prep your EV for hot weather
To keep your EV happy, try to maintain the battery temperature between 68°F and 86°F. If your car’s temperature rises, consider parking in the shade whenever possible and using preconditioning features if your EV has them. This lets you power the AC while it’s plugged in, using energy from the grid instead of the battery.
High heat can also raise your tire pressure. Before you start your journey, take a moment to check your tires and ensure they’re in the safe zone.
5. Pack your EV perfectly
EVs often have more storage than their gas-powered counterparts but packing efficiently still matters. You can use under-seat storage for smaller items and consider seatback organizers to stash toys or snacks. If you need extra space, rooftop boxes or hitch-mounted cargo carriers are great, just be mindful that extra drag can impact your EV's range.
Wherever the road takes you this summer, we hope these five tips help you make the most of it. Don’t forget to look for our chargers along the way and have an unforgettable summer road trip!
