A short introduction to the two most common types of EV charging plugs
New to electric vehicle charging? It can be helpful to become familiar with some of the common types of EV charging plugs. Here, we provide an overview both types of connectors we use at bp pulse in Australia.
CCS2 socket
This is a combination of slow alternating current (AC) and fast direct current (DC) connector.
CCS stands for Combined Charging System. The CCS Combo 2 (CCS2) connector fits into a Type 2 socket and includes two additional pins below to enable DC charging.
CCS2 has become the most widely used plug type for DC fast charging at public stations across Australia.

CHAdeMO socket
This is a fast DC charge connector.
CHAdeMO is short for ‘charge de move’ and uses DC to charge the vehicle’s battery and handles the conversion from AC at the charging station.
